Mushroom smell - what does the characteristic smell of the forest consist of?Although mushrooms are clearly first associated with the kitchen, achieving a mushroom scent that can be used in perfumery goes beyond the plate. Perfume creators reach for special ingredients to convey the aroma of mycelium, moss, and wet earth.
The basis of such compositions is geosmin – a molecule responsible for the characteristic smell of damp soil. Added to this is octenol, a natural substance present in mushrooms, which has a slightly metallic, inky character. The whole is complemented by isobutylquinoline, which brings a green, earthy-mushroom accent – like walking through a dense forest right after a storm.
If the composition is to imitate the aroma of truffles, perfumers reach for notes of vetiver, castoreum (with an animalic, balsamic tone) and patchouli, which together create the effect of a creamy, slightly "wild" depth.
To make the scent even more authentic, ingredients such as ambroxan and iso e super are added, which give the whole thing a light moisture and subtle shine - like a delicate mist settling on the forest floor.
